A Facebook cover photo is displayed at 820 × 312 pixels on a computer and 640 × 360 pixels on a phone. Those two shapes are not the same: desktop is a wide 2.63:1 strip, mobile is a squarer 16:9 crop that trims about 90 pixels from each side and shows a little more height. One file has to work for both.

The way to do that is to design in the overlap. A safe zone of 640 × 312 pixels in the centre of the 820 × 312 image is visible on both devices — put text, logos and faces there, and let the outer 90 pixels on each side carry only background.

Designing for desktop and mobile at once

Start with a canvas of 820 × 312 px. Mark the central 640 px — everything important lives inside it. On a phone the image is shown slightly taller, so Facebook scales the 820 × 312 file up and crops the sides; the centre band stays. If you want to control the extra height on mobile, upload 1640 × 720 instead: it keeps the 2.28:1 shape that fits both crops best and doubles the resolution for high-density screens.

Your profile picture sits over the bottom-left corner of the cover on desktop and centred below it on mobile. Keep that corner free of anything that must be readable.

Profile vs Page cover

Personal profiles and Facebook Pages use the same 820 × 312 cover dimensions and the same mobile crop. Pages additionally allow a cover video or a slideshow, and business Pages often show call-to-action buttons over the lower right of the cover — another area to keep clear of text.

File format and quality

Facebook recompresses every upload. For a photo, export a high-quality JPG in sRGB; for a design with text or a logo, use PNG so edges stay crisp. Keeping the file under about 100 KB reduces the chance of a visible second compression, but sharpness matters more than size — a 1640 × 720 PNG that is a few hundred kilobytes is fine.

Preparing the file locally

Drop the image into the social media resizer, select the Facebook cover preset and drag the picture until the subject is inside the centre band. Choose crop to fill the frame or fit to keep the whole image with a background colour, then download. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Facebook cover photo?

820 × 312 pixels on desktop and 640 × 360 pixels on mobile. The minimum accepted size is 400 × 150 pixels.

Why is my cover photo cropped on mobile?

Phones show a taller, narrower crop: about 90 pixels are trimmed from each side. Keep text and faces inside the centre 640 pixels.

What is the best upload size for a sharp cover?

Either 820 × 312 px or, for high-density screens, 1640 × 720 px. Both keep the safe zone in the same place.

Are Page and profile covers the same size?

Yes — both use 820 × 312 px on desktop and 640 × 360 px on mobile.

Is my image uploaded to imagenimble?

No. Cropping and resizing happen inside your browser; the file never reaches a server.
