What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
A YouTube thumbnail is 1280×720 pixels — a 16:9 aspect ratio, the same shape as the video itself. YouTube recommends a minimum width of 640 pixels and accepts JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF files up to 2 MB. Hitting the exact 1280×720 size means your thumbnail stays crisp everywhere it appears, from the tiny suggestion rail to a full-width feature on a TV screen.
This tool resizes any image to that exact size without uploading anything. Drop in a photo or screenshot, then choose crop (fill the frame and reposition by dragging) or fit (show the whole image with a background colour you pick). The preview is the real 16:9 frame, so what you see is exactly what downloads — at a clean 1280×720, ready to upload.
Keep the important part of your thumbnail away from the very bottom-right corner: that is where YouTube overlays the video duration. Big, legible text and a single clear focal point read best at small sizes, since most thumbnails are first seen on a phone. When the framing looks right, export as JPG for a small file or PNG to keep maximum sharpness.
Need other formats from the same image? Switch the preset to size it for an Instagram post, a TikTok cover, a Pinterest pin or a profile picture — or use “download all sizes” to get every platform at once in a single ZIP, all generated locally on your device.

YouTube accepts custom thumbnails up to 2 MB. Exporting as JPG keeps the file well under that limit; the tool shows the exact output size before you download.
No. The image is resized entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
