When to convert PNG to JPG — and when to keep PNG
JPG is the right target whenever the image is a photograph or a detailed, full-colour picture that does not need a transparent background. Screenshots of photos, exported artwork, product shots and social-media images all shrink dramatically as JPG while looking identical to the eye — often to a quarter of the original size or less. That smaller footprint is what makes pages load faster, keeps email attachments under limits and speeds up every upload.
Stay with PNG in two cases: when the image needs a transparent background — a logo, an icon, a cut-out — and when it is a flat graphic with sharp edges and few colours, where JPG compression would smear the lines. If that is your situation, use the compressor to shrink the PNG instead, or export to WebP to get a small file that still keeps transparency.
How the conversion happens on your own device

PNG, JPG and WebP — which format to choose
Each format is built for a different job. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so it is ideal for graphics, logos and anything that must stay pixel-perfect, but its files are large for photos. JPG is lossy and compact, unbeatable for photographs where a tiny, invisible loss of detail is a fair price for a much smaller file. WebP sits between the two: it compresses as well as JPG or better and can keep transparency like PNG, which makes it the best choice for modern websites.

Getting the best quality-to-size result
JPG quality is a slider, not a switch. At 85 to 90 per cent, the compressed image is visually indistinguishable from the original for almost every photo while the file stays small; below about 70 per cent you start to see blocky artefacts in skies and smooth gradients. Start high, look at the preview, and only lower the quality if the file still needs to be smaller.
Converting to JPG never changes the pixel dimensions of your image — a 4000-pixel-wide PNG becomes a 4000-pixel-wide JPG. If you also want fewer pixels, resize first and then convert. And because JPG cannot store transparency, any see-through areas are filled with a background colour, white by default, so flatten onto the colour you want before converting a transparent PNG.
