AVIF compresses better than anything else in wide use — often a third smaller than WebP at the same quality. The catch is everything outside the browser: image editors, CMS uploads, older phones and plenty of desktop software still cannot open an AVIF file. WebP sits one step back in compression but is understood almost everywhere.

Both formats are lossy by default, so a conversion means encoding a second time. For a picture that will be looked at, that is invisible; for one that goes through several more editing rounds, keep the original AVIF and convert only the copy you publish.
