Convert a PNG into an ICO file
ICO is the icon container Windows and browsers expect. Unlike PNG it can hold several sizes in one file, which is exactly what a favicon needs: the browser picks 16 px for the tab, the bookmark bar wants 32, the desktop shortcut 48. Give it a single PNG and you get all of them in one .ico.
Drop in a square PNG — 512 × 512 is ideal — and the icon is assembled on the canvas in your browser. You get favicon.ico containing 16, 32 and 48 pixels, plus separate PNG files from 16 up to 512 for the modern link tags and app manifests, all in one ZIP.
Design matters more than resolution here. An icon is read at the size of a fingernail, so a full logo with a wordmark turns to mush — use a single strong shape, high contrast and generous margins. Test it at 16 px before you ship it; whatever is still recognisable there is the right design.
Nothing is uploaded. That is worth something for a favicon in particular: a logo for an unannounced product is exactly the kind of file you would rather not hand to a stranger’s converter weeks before launch.
